Overview

There are several RF personal monitors available.  RF Safety Solutions recommends the Nardalert XT over the alternates for several important reasons:

Accuracy:  The Nardalert XT is very accurate when worn on the body over effectively the entire RF spectrum (100 kHz to 100 GHz) with all types of signal formats.  Nothing else comes close to matching its bandwidth even on paper.   The specified bandwidth for some models is for use off the body, which is of little value as a personal monitor.  Other models tend to "false alarm" a great deal.  RF Safety Solutions has used the Nardalert XT at all types of complex sites and have been amazed how well it matches up with the best survey instruments.

Alarms and Indicators:  The Nardalert XT has two very distinct audible alarms that can be set using the optional interface kit.  Both alarms are quite loud.  It is often difficult to hear the other monitors that are on the market, including the earlier Narda designs.  Only the Nardalert XT has a vibrator alarm.  The LEDs are extremely bright and color coded.  The LEDs can be seen while wearing the monitor.

Ergonomics & Climbing: The Nardalert XT has two different types of mounting clips that are standard and two types of optional soft cases.  One of these soft cases is designed to attach to a safety harness.  There have been countless numbers of monitors that have been dropped while climbing towers and this is by far the best solution available to securely attach a monitor while climbing.

Using Monitors with RF Protective Suits

We have learned of a potentially very dangerous procedure used by some tower climbers.  These climbers wear RF protective garments and an RF personal monitor under the garment in the mistaken belief that the monitor will worn them when he or she is in an RF field too high even for those wearing a suit.  RF personal monitors do not function properly when worn under an RF protective garment.  This is a very dangerous practice.

The best solution for this application are the 8864 series High Power Nardalert XTs, which have a higher measurement range and are designed to be worn outside the RF protective garment.  The full scale rating of these monitors is 1,000 percent of the applicable limit.  In the case of the model A8864, the monitor's full scale range is 1,000 percent of the FCC's Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) limit for Occupational/Controlled exposure.  This application is discussed in greater detail under Tower Climbing.  The specifications are in the Nardalert XT Data Sheet.
